Jessica Holmes, Comedic Entertainer and Improviser, is the keynote speaker. Jessica is best known as a popular member of the long-running hit CBC TV show, Royal Canadian Air Farce. She also wrote and starred in her own one-hour Comedy Now! Special, “Holmes Alone”, which won a Platinum Award at the Worldfest International Film Festival, in Houston, and was nominated for a Gemini Award. Jessica’s comedic high jinks and crazy antics are sure to amuse even the most straight-faced audiences. Jessica will speak to “Laugh it Off & Bring it On”. As a person whose passion is to make people laugh, Jessica’s near crippling depression threatened her happiness and her career. Once recovered, she re-committed her life to discovering what creates lasting balance and fulfillment. In this funny and inspiring presentation, Jessica shares her hilarious personal anecdotes (whether about being a stuttering, sunburned missionary in Venezuela, or one of the stars of a sketch comedy series) to help others reignite their spark. Full Circle, an award winning benefit for children, is an event geared to the celebration of the accomplishments of women, but, of course, men are welcome and encouraged to attend. The evening includes business networking, a 4-course sit-down dinner, entertainment, silent auction, raffles, secret scrolls and a fabulous gift bag for attendees.

The objective of the event is to raise money and awareness of The Mississauga Waterfront Festival’s “Sponsor a Child Program”.   Support will enable sponsorship of more children from local shelters and help agencies such as Boys and Girls Club, Our Place Peel, Interim Place, Community Living and Foster Parents Plan, as well as schools and church organizations with outreach programs to attend the festival totally free of charge! Since 1997, over 35,000 children and their families have been welcomed to the festival through this program.

Full Circle recently won the Best Fundraising Idea Award from Festivals & Events Ontario out of over 4,000 events. Since 2004, the event has raised over $230,000 allowing more children to enjoy a free weekend of popular entertainment, exciting attractions, delicious food, carnival rides and enough smiles and memories to last a lifetime.  For many, it’s the highlight of their summer; for some, their only summer holiday.

3^rd annual Find A Way event supports Credit Valley Hospital program for ‘at-risk teens’

(Mississauga, Ont., June 1, 2011 ) – - The 3^rd annual Father’s Day Find A Way 5k run/walk is being held Sunday June 19 to raise money for teen suicide prevention.

The Find A Way run/walk is in Port Credit (Lakeshore E. and Front St.) and starts at 9 a.m. Participants can register on run day starting at 7:30 a.m. or on-line before the run at www.findawayrun.com.

The flat and picturesque route is along the water and winds through several beautiful streets lining the lakefront. For $25, ($20 each for family registrants) participants receive a T-shirt and goodie bag, complete with a $5 entry coupon to the Mississauga Waterfront Festival (www.themwf.com) which is across the street from the finish line.

The run is organized by CameronHelps (www.cameronhelps.ca), a Mississauga-based charity that is raising awareness of teen depression and suicide across the country. The Find A Way 5k run/walk is a major fundraiser for the organization, which has three main objectives: advocacy, youth outreach and clinical support. David Harris, the founder of CameronHelps and its CEO, is a regular speaker at high school assemblies in Mississauga. He has also pledged to run 19 consecutive Mississauga marathons in memory of his son, Cameron who was 19 years-old when he committed suicide. Harris, is an avid volunteer coach and supporter of the Credit Valley Hospital group therapy running program for “at risk teens.”

“The Find A Way event is a great time for families to get out and get some exercise together, enjoy the lakefront and the fun of running or walking with others. Along with raising money for youth suicide prevention, the event also helps us raise awareness of teen depression and mental illness. Up to 20% of teens have a depressive disorder and suicide is the second leading cause of death among teenagers,” Harris says.

The Credit Valley Hospital group therapy running program, was founded by social worker Dan McGann, who participates in the Find A Way run along with some of his young clients.  As quoted in Runners’ World magazine, he says, “The kids learn they can overcome obstacles, such as running up a steep hill, and that they don’t have to face problems alone. Running helps us bypass some of our barriers and defenses.”

“Recent scientific research has confirmed what runners have known all along,” says Harris. “Physical exercise, like running, can improve a person’s mental state.”

Welcome to Mississauga Future Star Vocal Competition

Is your dream to become the next big singing sensation? Think you’ve got what it takes to be a Mississauga star? The Mississauga Future Star Vocal Competition is calling all Mississauga vocalists between the ages of 15 and 25 to audition for a chance to become the 2011 Future Star!

Produced annually by the Mississauga Arts Council, the Mississauga Waterfront Festival and Metalworks Institute of Sound and Music Production, the competition is now accepting submissions from up-and-coming vocalists. Winning the competition is a major career break as it includes a $2000 cash prize, a showcase opportunity at Canadian Music Week 2012 and much more!

“We know Mississauga is a hot-bed of up-and-coming vocal talent,” explains Linda Thomas, Executive Director of the Mississauga Arts Council. “We invite all emerging vocalists to take advantage of this amazing opportunity to hone their talents and win the title of 2011 Mississauga Future Star. Participating in the competition is an unforgettable experience that will positively impact the career of any young performer.”

ENTRY IS EASY! All vocalists have to do is submit their completed and signed application form, along with song lyrics and headshots no later than Thursday April 4th to the New Page to be added!! I will be sending pictures to!

The Mississauga Future Star Competition is disseminated over three rounds. Singers will be selected to perform at the Preliminary Round to be held on April 15 at Metalworks Institute of Sound & Music Production. Here vocalists will be asked to perform a cappella. A panel of professional judges will then decide which contestants move on to the next level.

The top 20 contestants will then perform at the Semi-Final Round held on May 20 at Metalworks Institute. After this round, the top 10 contestants will perform and compete for the title of the Mississauga Future Star 2011 at the Finals to be held at the Mississauga Waterfront Festival on June 19, 2011.

Please note that these age limits will be strictly enforced and contestants will be asked to provide identification with proof of age at the Preliminary Rounds. This competition is open to legal residents of Mississauga only.
